    Edwardian Ball 2010!
Hello San Francisco! We, Vagabond Opera, are back in a month to grace the Edwardian Ball's 10th Anniversary show.

    On Jan 22nd, we're playing!

For those who do not know, we bring to you Opera reinvented! Gypsy, cabaret, vaudeville, Eastern European, Yiddish, Balkan and more! In over 14 different languages, we bring in Bulgarian Accordion, sinfully fast cellos (yes, two cellos!), jazzy drums beats, relentless upright bass and salacious saxophone.

Tickets are avaliable here and they seem to be going fast. You can also view a flyer here!

We'd love to see you there and the Edwardian Ball is a blast! Let us know if you have any questions we can answer.

    Caio, darlings!

    Notification System
    **EDIT Wed Dec 9 00:28:16 UTC 2009 **

The notification system has been fixed in the new release... we are currently processing the queue, which is upwards of 12m jobs... please bear with us while our workers chew through this large queue and get your notification / emails out. Some may come more quickly than others due to weights on the notifications themselves, but we are hoping in the next 24 hours to have all the queues cleared and all notifications delivered that had been queued up over the past few days.

Again I apologize for this inconvenience, but we are almost out of the woods as soon as we are done clear cutting some of the forest ;)

    Thanks,

    ** END EDIT**

    Hey Guys,

Unfortunately with our last release, and its instability, we were forced to roll back releases. Unfortunately in doing so, it would seem that our notification system has been broken somehow. Our engineers are working on this issue as quickly as possible. We hope to have a patch within the next day, so we can deploy our code and fix the notification system at the same time. Please *bear* with us ;)

Currently all notifications are being queued up so they can be processed as soon as the fix is pushed and verified to be working correctly.

    Thank you,

    Teff-only injera?
Hi all, I am interested in trying Ethiopian food within San Francisco but I'm allergic to wheat flour. I know most restaurants will make their injera the traditional way, with only teff, but I don't know how to tell which ones are guaranteed not to use wheat flour. Does anyone have a recommendation for a restaurant that they know doesn't use wheat? Thanks.

    Dealing with Difficult People
    Dealing With Difficult People

It is not unusual to find difficult people in this world. Everywhere, at work, at home, from every type of person, old, young, rich, or poor, there may stubborn, closed-minded, or easily angered people. Often they are critical of others and yourself and are difficult to communicate or deal with. First of all, there is nothing wrong with having difficult people. Even monks, nuns and the Buddha faced such people in their lives and we still do, everyone must face these types of people no matter who you are. There is a famous story of such an encounter between the Buddha and a ‘difficult person’ named Akkosina.

Akkosina’s name means “Not Getting Angry” but he was the exact opposite of his name. Akkosina was easily angered and was always angry about something or someone. When he heard that the Buddha did not get angry with anyone he immediately decided to visit him. He went up to the Buddha and scolded him for all sorts of things, insulting him and calling him awful names. At the end of this angry speech, the Buddha asked this man if he had any friends or relatives. “Yes.” Akokosina replied. “When you visit them, do you take them gifts?” the Buddha asked. “Of course, I always bring them gifts.” The angry man replied. “Then what happens if they don’t accept your gifts?” The Buddha asked. “Well I take them home and enjoy them with my own family” “And likewise,” said the Buddha, “You have brought me a gift here today that I do not accept, and so you may take that gift home to your family.” And so with patience, wit and loving friendliness, did the Buddha teach about how we react and accept the “gift” of angry words.

If we respond to insults, gossip, angry speech in general with mindfulness and loving friendliness, we are able to with patience take a better perspective of the situation. If you respond with anger, you will not hear the message behind the words. Perhaps the person is pointing out something you need to hear. Perhaps you need to point out something they need to hear as well and it must be done with a clear heart and mind. The Buddha said:

“In a Controversy the instant we feel anger, we have already ceased striving for the truth and have begun striving for ourselves.”

The wisdom of this quote is that it shows that with anger our discussions become selfish and we are unable to express the loving friendliness helps solve life’s difficulties. The method to solve these difficulties is through patient honesty. We must not allow the difficult people to assume victory, this requires patience and the ability to explain your side of the argument through truthful and friendly disagreement. You must not change your opinion or actions in a negative way to deal with someone who is critical or angry. Do not add fuel to the fire of the argument when dealing with people who speak unwholesomely, are stubborn, who gossip, or have a quick temper. Instead speak words of wisdom and explain that the path they travel is incorrect, and that the eight fold path is a wise journey to take. Human beings are emotional creatures, the oldest instincts we have are emotional, that is why we easily are influenced by our emotions. We therefore must evolve our mind to overcome these ancient responses so that we too do not become difficult when we deal with friends, family, or strangers.

“The wise who control their body, who control their tongue, who control their mind, are indeed well controlled.”

So with those words of the Buddha I urge you to go and act well with dilligient love and friendliness so that all who know you may also be lit with the candle of kindness. As the Buddha said:

“Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened, Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

With Metta, will all obstacles be overcome.

    San Francisco in January!
So I've decided to move to San Francisco in January!
I'm thrilled... I've been hankering to make a home out West for almost a year.
I know absolutely no one, and so far I have no leads on a job or place to live.
I'm a kids yoga teacher, raw vegan chef, nutritionist, Reiki Master, jeweler, exotic dancer, wanderer, worshipper, mover, shaker, cowboy, Quaker... etc.

If anyone knows of a cheap room or studio for rent near downtown, or of a great place that's hiring (raw/vegan and/or "new-agey" environment preferred) or would like to put me up for a bit when I get there in exchange for some great company while I search for those things in person, let me know! E-mail me jilive00{at}yahoo{dot}com.

I can't wait to get out there and meet you all! Blessings!

    free clinics & thankful thursday
Anyone have experience with the berkeley free clinic? Know it's still up and running (I read about the budget cuts, that's ominous.)? Any other free medical clinics in the bay area, the closer to oakland the better, but berkeley and san fran can be traveled to. My friend actually has insurance, required by her school, but there's a $750 deductible and she doesn't have money for food or the bus next week not to mention medical charges applied to her deductible. Not sure what happened but her finger is painful, swollen, and discolored. She thinks it's infected and needs to be lanced. And she needs a place she can get that done (or get it looked at and get antibiotics, or something) for as little money as possible considering she has $12 in the bank. Any ideas/assistance is greatly appreciated.

I am thankful for the patience of my partner who has born my almost two-week illness in stride and continues to make me soup and tea and clean my handkerchiefs and just in general puts up with my grumpy whiny ass. I am also thankful this quarter is almost, almost over. And that my aunt is coming to visit next week, along with an old friend from Vermont. Yay for visits and old friends.

    MogileFS Maintenance
    **EDIT Thu Dec 3 23:24:15 UTC 2009 **

Hey Everyone, we are about to run the last alter job that we need to on our database servers. This will effect userpics / scrapbook / vgift images for the next few hours. Have no fear, your images aren't lost, there is just a really intensive process running on the servers which store the information for mogilefs. Thank you for your understanding and all the LJ love...

    Hey LJers,

I just wanted to let you all know that we are going to be performing some mogilefs maintenance over the next few days. We will be upgrading our current version to latest stable as well as changing some db config information to better handle the amount of files we are currently hosting. This shouldn't cause a big impact on site stability, but you may see some minor delays with userpic / scrapbook images appearing or other requests associated with our mogilefs. We would love to not have that happen, but unfortunately with some of the steps we need to take we have to cause a delay with images. I figured this was a better solution than taking down all of LiveJournal because well lets face it, we all need our daily LJ fix ;)

    Thanks,

    Used car dealerships
So the first and only time I bought a car was in 2001 and then I sold it in 2004 so I am very, very in need of solid advice about buying a used car. I'm on a budget and think that a Honda Fit would be the best car for me to get, but getting one with low mileage would mean going over my price range. (I'd like to ideally get something for around 10k.) I've heard that a Nissan Versa is sort of the poor man's Fit; as in that it's very similar to the Fit just slightly not as awesome and therefore cheaper. I have Zipcar right now and have really enjoyed driving the Versa over the Civic. (I have a bike and like how having a hatchback would mean not having to remove the front wheel.) My priorities are gas mileage and buying a car that has less than 50k on it; the first car I had back from '01-04 had a lot of miles on it and I don't want to deal with old-age issues that cars can get when they're over 100k. I'm looking for something reliable since I'll be using it to get to and from night school (Oakland to Berkeley). If anyone has had any fantastic experiences with specific dealers, I'd love to know about them. I'm concerned that my lack of car buying experience will cause me to get screwed over by a slimy dealer. And if anyone can shed light on whether or not it's a good idea to get an older Prius, that would be cool. It'd be great to get a hybrid since a lot of my driving needs don't involve the freeway but I wonder if there are risks on getting one of the older Priuses (or Priusi?). I'd be willing to pay up to 12k for a older hybrid if that's a more worthwhile way to go. My plan is to buy a car within the month to take advantage of year-end sales. (Are "year end" sales more awesome right before or right after New Year's by the way?) Anyway, thanks in advance for any help and patience with my obvious naivete on the subject!

    Hey yo, everyone.

So my friend lives in Marin and I live in the Excelsior district (that's southern San Francisco, for those of you who don't know where the Excelsior is). We want to meet and hang out for many, many hours somewhere much more northerly (close to the Golden Gate Bridge) so that she doesn't have to drive very far into town. Maybe sort of in the Presidio/Cow Hollow/Marina area, which I know nothing about. Despite living here for about nineteen years, I've only really explored the south and eastern areas of San Francisco.

So anyone got any suggestions for some cool cafes, parks, or restaurants where my friend and I can hang out that's somewhat near the Golden Gate Bridge? Or maybe even just a street with a lot of cool businesses on them? I can take a bus, but she has to drive, so an area with easy parking (and free, if possible) would be really great.
